Hybrid car’s battery toxicity

Since the hybrid cars market is growing more in the recent years, some people still concern about the pollution especially when dumping these cars and getting new one. Sure the car itself is less harmful than other normal cars. The main concern is when the hybrid utopia might be biggest worries when the nickel metal hybrid batteries end up in the landfills.

Today’s batteries like lead acid or nickel cadmium are extremely bad for the environment. Some studies shows that the exposure to the lead can cause brain and kidney damage. Sometimes it damage the hearing impairment and leaning problems with children.

Hybrids makers know these issues and started thinking about it since the beginning. This is where they thought about changing the battery itself. Today’s hybrid batteries are far more advanced and less harmful than the old ones when it comes to the toxic level such as lithium ion. The Environmental Defense says that the lead is the worst, nickel is next, and lithium is the least harmful.

Recent hybrid cars and the new ones are using the lithium ion battery which last longer than the old batteries. Carmakers also provide warranty on those batteries for approximately 10 years. These batteries have a lifespan of 200,000 miles which is almost a lifespan of today’s car. Lithium ion batteries will also be used in the future cars.
