Nature's Solution for Man's Pollution: Sea Urchins

Clams, oysters and corals can convert carbon dioxide in the water into calcium carbonate and use it to make their shells.

But sea urchins take it one step further. A recent study has discovered that sea urchins combine the carbon dioxide from the water with the metal nickel in their external skeletons, to make their shell.

What does that mean for us? Scientists at Newcastle University believe that if we take the CO2 emitted by power plants and combine it with nickel, a cheap resource, it would completely remove the toxic gas, releasing nothing but good 'ol harmless calcium carbonate.
