The Shocking Results of Covid-19

Across the nation, we have seen how this pandemic has effected many lives so rapidly; however, the homeless population are affected even more considering they have almost no control over the spaces where they live and the spaces are often confined living areas. In addition, majority of them suffers from poor medical conditions that have never or receive very little treatment which makes them more peril to high rates of infections and mortalities.  Because they already have a hard time accessing public restrooms and to wash their hands, now that many businesses doors are closed, it is obvious the challenges for the homeless population has increase and will continue to rise as more restrictions are implemented. Not only can they affect those that are in close proximity but also, the rest of the population which raises great concerns.  The food distribution events are great intentions because it is a dire need; nevertheless, it is imperative to gear our focus at this time in providing the homeless population with urgent medical intervention services and resources in order to prevent further spread of the virus and most importantly mortalities.

Many counties, municipal are taking drastic intervention measures in helping the homeless population. The article provides an insight into how Miami Dade County has installed several hand washing stations throughout the high populated homeless areas.  Staff is consistently distributing hand sanitizers, masks, and taking temperatures. In addition, Camillus House a landmark which has provided humanitarian services in Miami Dade County such as serving hot meals, providing shelter, skills, employment, is now serving meals-to-go throughout the day to ensure the homeless population continues to receive their basic needs. Also, shelters are consistently cleaned thoroughly on a daily basis. These preventable measures the counties, municipalities, organizations are implementing are imperative in getting the virus outbreak under control and further spreading.

Just because you're stuck inside, doesn't mean you can't register to vote

Just because you're stuck inside, doesn't mean you can't register to vote

When I was a senior in high school I became a registered voter. My fellow peers were going around during lunchtime handing out pamphlets for those to register to vote. Voting has been described as the duty of American citizens by many. With the spread of COVID-19, this 2020 schools and institutions have closed and little things like these getting the next generation to fill out their voter registration forms have been more difficult. As bad as COVID-19 has been this year, millions of young adults have the option to become voters to have a say for the first time in our elections. Since we are living in a technological era it is possible to register to vote online. If you are turning 18 soon or are already 18 then click this link to become a registered voter now! It will only take just a few moments:

Meanwhile, as a reminder during these times it is important to stay safe, wash your hands, and keep your mind and body healthy. Stay active and call your friends!

Covid-19 Horror For Homeless

With Covid-19 rapidly evolving. It made me wonder how many homeless are in danger? How many will actually get the virus and what are the steps being taken to prevent spread. I did some research based on the homeless population in California (where I'm from) Its expected 60,000 homeless will be infected by Covid-19.

We all know the disadvantages they already have. Social distancing is a struggle with in the community as food and shelter are bleak. Others rely off each other to provide those goods. The hard life of being homeless has their health well below average. I assume they do not qualify for the $1200 stimulus check. They do not pay taxes nor have living addresses. Things like shelter and safe places to live are key. Most shelters are re-structuring so they can encourage social distancing while still providing a safe place of shelter.

I think its vital we have more people like Transition Projects who help those truly in need. Ultimately, we are still sharing this world with the homeless. If they are infected, they have the potential to infect anyone else. We walk the same streets, touch the same doors etc. Getting them off the streets and into safe places that promote social distancing is key. I know its a tough act, but if this virus truly continues through the year. We will need to find a broader solution faster.
