A Chicago, IL taxi company has recently added 12 Ford Transit connect taxi cabs to it's fleet that will work using compressed natural gas. While this is good news for the the environment, it doesn't really compare to what is going on in the rest of the world. However, you can learn more about their addition to the Chicago taxi fleet here: http://chicagobreakingbusiness.com/2011/01/chicago-adding-natural-gas-taxis.html
However, it appears that USA is behind the curve when it comes to taxi conversions to CNG.
The Bangkok Post has indicated they switched half of the cities 60,000 from petrolium gas two years ago. You can read more about the Chinese implementation of CNG taxis here:

An interesting side note, they are even toying with the idea of making the conversion FREE!
In Peru they have estimated that they have saved over 414 million dollars by converting over to the use compressed natural gas. What is even more interesting is that they made the change in 2007, and saw the savings in 2008. Read more about Peru's switch here:

Switching over *ONLY* commercial vehicles to compressed natural gas would save millions of dollars worldwide. Imagine the cost savings if all vehicles were switched over.
