LGBTQ+ Portland Homeless Youth Runs a T-Shirt Company

dfrntpigeon

Portland's marginalized homeless youth is running a t-shirt company designed to express their unique experiences and perspectives on the world.

Their business model helps at-risk youth develop their creative abilities into a potential career path through paid design work and mentorship from professionals in the creative field.

The goal is to create art, alongside fashion.

Portland-based nonprofit New Avenues for Youth(opens in a new tab), which helps support at-risk youth through counseling, meals, and career services, launched the dfrntpigeon program in 2016 as a way for at-risk youth to express themselves through visual arts.

The goal of the program — and now the new apparel brand of the same name — is to help connect young people with mentors, freelance opportunities, and careers in graphic design

MANIFESTO

We are here for the different ones.

The strange, crazy, ugly ones.

The freedom-fighters.

Those who know what it means to

eat, sleep and breathe survival.

Who aren’t defined by the hand

they’ve been dealt.

We are here to show that

struggle made us better, not broken.

We are here to prove that

true beauty is imperfect.

And when it comes to adversity?

We don’t just rise above it,

we take flight.
