A More Transgender Inclusive Shelter

Homelessness affects people of all demographics; however, transgender men and women experience about 15% higher rates of experiencing homelessness than cisgender men and women according to the Trevor Project’s 2021 Homelessness report. With many more transgender folks experiencing homelessness and needing shelter, it is important that providers in our city think about ways to create a shelter space as inclusive as possible for this portion of the population.

MPTC (Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition) created a Shelter for All Genders Best Practices guide in 2013 to assist providers to create a more inclusive space. This guide has information regarding11 different areas including Confidentiality, Accommodations, Health Issues, and even Training. All individuals deserve to be considered when creating spaces to assist during the stressful experience of entering a shelter, is your shelter including the needs of our Transgender community?
