"Breaking the Cycle: Financial Barriers to Homeless Hygiene and How We Can Help"
WHAT:
A large issue in homelessness is the financial barriers, making it difficult for an individual to maintain proper hygiene care. Many people experiencing homelessness lack the access to basic hygiene products, such as soap, shampoo, or toothpaste due to one's limited financial accessibility. Public facilities like showers and laundromats may charge fees that are further limiting their ability to stay clean. Without having a stable income or housing the cost of maintaining cleanliness will start to become a large struggle. The longer the daily struggle to maintain cleanliness leads to social stigma and bigger health issues that can have long term negative impacts on the individuals. Additionally, the financial burden of transportation to travel to hygiene facilities or purchasing basic hygiene items is a constant challenge for those who are experiencing homelessness. An example is dental care can be expensive, and most homeless individuals cannot afford it. Emergencies such as dental care can be expensive, and preventive care is often out of reach or may deal with long waiting periods to receive these treatments and needs.
HOW TO FIX:
To fix financial barriers to hygiene for the homeless, local communities can come together to establish free or low-cost public hygiene facilities, such as showers and laundromats that are accessible to those in need. Nonprofits and local governments can collaborate to distribute hygiene kits, including soap, toothpaste, and feminine hygiene products to local shelters and outreach programs. Offering transportation vouchers or creating mobile hygiene units that can help remove the obstacle of getting to a facility. Financial assistance programs could also be expanded to provide support for purchasing hygiene essentials. Finally, raising awareness and advocating for public policies that include hygiene as a basic human right can encourage greater investment in more accessible resources for homeless individuals. In the local Portland area there are resources in the community such as student run clinics and organizations located in the next section that offer free or low costing services.
