Safe Rest Villages: A Stepping Stone for Those in Need

By Mariya Chmykh

As housing becomes less affordable, many individuals fall victim to living without a safe or sustainable shelter. In Portland State University's research report, during 2022 to 2023, the number of unsheltered homeless individuals in Multnomah County has increased by 29%. PSU’s study also discovered that there is a shortage of shelters these individuals. Without a safe shelter, the process to secure a job and apply for housing can be difficult.

Urban Alchemy, a shelter management organization, is working to reverse these statistics by providing temporary units for individuals without homes. During their stay, guests are given resources to help them obtain housing. According to the City of Portland, Urban Alchemy is one of multiple organizations that provide temporary safe rest villages to accommodate those who need help getting back on their feet.

These safe rest villages offer more than just a temporary place to sleep. Urban Alchemy provides amenities, such as restrooms, showers, kitchenettes, electricity, washing machines, and storage to aid in hygiene and comfort. Guests are also assisted with enrolling in health insurance through the Oregon Health Plan, applying for veterans benefits, and food stamps. Additionally, guests are given the opportunity to obtain up to date government identification documents for future purposes, such as applying for employment or a place to live. Guests are provided with onsite healthcare for their physical and mental wellbeing. Accessible healthcare is crucial for everyone, especially for those who are unable to hold employment due to an untreated disability.

This project is financially supported through Portland City's funds, Oregon State's emergency funding, a federal grant (the American Rescue Plan Act), and the Joint Office for Homeless Services. Urban Alchemy works diligently to provide as many resources as needed for their guests to get back up on their feet. Sometimes it can be difficult to navigate life alone, it's okay to ask for help.

Urban Alchemy currently has three functioning shelters and one currently in development.
