When we think of electric cars, it’s possible some of us
imagine something that looks like a modified golf cart, something clunky.
During the mid 1970’s, the Sebring-Vanguard Citicar was produced. It looked like this
It is the most produced electric car in American History. It
had a range of about 40 miles (64km) per charge, with top speeds at 30 mph (48
km/h) - 50 mph (80 km/h). To be fair, it was produced in part to address the
then current energy crisis. Style was obviously not the first priority.
General Motors called it a poor investment depite the fact
that these cars were only leased, never sold—not even to customers who begged. The
documentary does a good job in not pointing fingers. It seems we’re all
implicated, some suspects more suspicious than others, and it shows how close
we might have come to having a good thing 15 years ago.

As of Feb. 14, gasoline cost in America is between 3 and 4
dollars. West Coast prices are significantly more, at $3.38 for the area in
general. California prices are 6 cents higher. For now, it looks as if Musk’s
estimate is appropriate. The comparative cost may be much lower depending on
where you live and future gas prices. This estimate doesn’t take into account
the diminished impact on the environment (amount depends on where you live),
which, if accounted for, provides an even better ratio in comparison with
cheaper gasoline cars. Now that it has the proper support, the electric car has become much cooler.
