Using Technology to Keep Older Adults Socializing

We often hear the stereotype about older adults being bad with technology and that older adults don’t like using technology, however, technology provides real benefits to our older population. As people get older, they start to face a myriad of problems including physical health issues, but also things like social isolation and depression. Technology can be used to help older adults stay connected to the rest of the world, and socialize.

Social networking sites like Facebook and video chatting apps help older adults to stay connected to friends and family no matter where they are. Staying connected to loved ones can reduce the feeling of social isolation and combat depression. Older adults can also use smartphones, tablets, and computers to read what is happening in their community and around the world. They can also use this technology to play different games that engage their brain. These activities are good for older adults’ mental health. Also, studies show that older adults who use social networking sites are more likely to socialize, whether that be online, in person, or on the phone.

We should encourage and help older adults use technology so that they can reap the mental health benefits that technology provides, and so we can stay connected to our loved ones.
