Winter can seem like the most dangerous time of the year for the homeless, but the summer season is also dangerous for homeless from some reasons. Let’s talk about how the summer weather affect to the homeless, and how we can help them.
First of all, there’re no Air Conditioner for the Homeless. The location in desert such as Las Vegas or Arizona which are Mojabe Desert in West Coast would be really ciritical to this issue. The homeless would find a good spot for AC, but it’s not easy. The homeless stand at increased risk for hyperthermia or heat stroke from the heat on the Summer Season. When there’re a Hyperthermia alert on, it would be a serious issue for them.
Second, bad foot hygiene can have bad consequences. The homeless are often on their feet all day long, and the hot weather can lead to severe athele’s foot, pitted keratolysis, ingrown toe nails, and more. This problem can be easily avoided with extra footwear, dry socks, and consistently clean, but many homeless couldn’t get cleaned well because of insufficient facility and extra pairs.
Third, the medication can mess with the way the human body reacts to heat, especially for those who has a mental illness. Also, the blood pressure might be targeted from changing temperature. The heat will also exacerbate any breathing problem.
Fourth, staying hydrated would be hard. Dehydration during the summer is actuallhy a bigger cause of death. Restaurant and store often have a “Customer only” policy, so they wouldn’t be served if they have any money to have the meal.
What can we do for them on the summer time then?
First, we can donate items for them. Any socks, sunscreen, bottle water, water bottles, hats, or sunglasses would be helpful. Non-profit organization or other facility may open “Summer Donation” event, so that many people can engage with this involvment.

Second, inform to the homeless about the facility that offers service for them. There’re many facilities that offer a shelter with meal for the homeless, but many people doesn’t know about where they can get a help.

Third, we can engage any volunteering activity for homeless. Both of summer and winter season, either non-profit organization or the facilities helping the homeless needs extra help. Having an open mind and being active would be help for one spirit.
