Often people really want to give to the homeless but do not
want to give cash in fear that it will be spent unwisely. Listed below are some
easy things you can do to help give a helping hand to someone in need. These
will help to give you constructive ways to give to the homeless. It is
important to ask prior to offering anything. You do not want to assume that
they need your help, nor do you want to give them something they truly do not
need. Some people may have negative reactions to items you may offer up so
remember that they are going through a rough time, so please do not be
discouraged.
Acknowledge and Engage.
It is important to acknowledge and even in engage in
conversation with the homeless. It is common for people to avoid contact due to
social stigmas or just not knowing what to say. But it is common for homeless
people to feel isolated and lonely and even just a simple “Hello” or “How are
you today?” could really have a profound impact on their day. A smile can go a
long way to help make someone’s day a little bit better.
Be Prepared to Give
Carry prepackaged food, such as granola bars, dried fruit,
jerky, trail mis and other healthy snacks to offer to any homeless person you
might come across. You can also purchase gift cards to inexpensive restaurants
to give out as well. Water bottles, reusable or not, are also a great gift to
help avoid dehydration.
Seasonal Help
During winter it is a good idea to carry an extra scarf,
hat, gloves, jacket or even boots that you do not wear anymore to give to a
homeless person you may encounter. During the summer it is a good idea to carry
clean t-shirts and shorts. Lotion and sunscreen are both great things to give
out year-round, for being exposed to the elements tends to lead to dry and
cracked skin. Make sure to snag any of the complimentary lotions from hotels
when you stay. Socks are also an item that the homeless can appreciate
regardless of the weather. A fresh pair of clean socks can do wonders for
lifting someone’s spirit.
