To Give or Not to Give?

One of the most common things I think we’re all used to hearing when it comes to homelessness is about them begging for money. Some people feel guilty and give money, and others don’t because they assume the homeless person will simply waste it on drugs or alcohol. There are even terrible people out there who pretend to be homeless, then go home in their nice car that was parked around the block the whole time. So what’s the right move? Should we be giving money, or would it be a waste or a scam if we did?

If you’re like me, and you really want to help but may not have the means to do so financially, there is a solution! There are so many things that can be of use to a homeless individual. For example, hygiene is a huge issue. You can hand out baggies with travel size toiletries: hair brush, tooth brush, tooth paste, mouth wash, cleansing wipes. You can buy a cheap burger off the dollar menu and give it to someone needing help on the streets. Just because there are a few sour apples, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do our part.

I encourage everyone to give this alternate method a try the next time they are asked for spare change! Instead of buying your daily cup of Starbucks, think of giving it to someone that’s cold on the streets.
