Tackling Food Insecurity and Waste

Food insecurity is a major issue in this country. According to the USDA, in 2020 13.8 million people in the United States were food insecure. People facing homelessness are some of the most at risk of being food insecure. At the same time, it is estimated that 30 - 40 % of food produced in the US goes to waste. However, there is a local program that seeks to solve both these problems, PDX Free Fridge. The PDX Free Fridge is a community based mutual aid group within the Portland Metro area that seeks to provide food, resources, and supplies to those in need. Currently the group has freezers, pantries, and fridges with food (both freshly made and non-perishable) that is supplied by people in the community. Freshly made goods are clearly labeled with any allergens and allow for people facing food insecurity access to nutritious meals. On the other hand, it provides a place for people to bring leftover freshly cooked food, so that it does not go to waste.

As the summer festivities and holidays approach consider donating leftovers to local pantries and fridges in the area! These fridges accept food, hygiene items, and pet food/supplies. If you or anyone you know is interested in donating, check out the link below.

Also, to anyone who is interested in opening a fridge/pantry in your community, PDX Free Fridge has instructions on how you can do so.
