The Psychological Impact of Homelessness

Much discussion has been had on how to help homeless individuals find shelter, but there has been little discussion on the lasting impact that homelessness itself has on these individuals. Homelessness can be psychologically harmful to those experiencing it. The loss of one's home can be traumatizing. Staying in a shelter (especially one that is set up purely for function with little regard for aesthetics) can be traumatizing. Additionally, the circumstances that lead to people becoming homeless may be traumatizing.

It is important to help homeless individuals remove themselves from these traumatizing situations, but attention should also be paid to the negative impact the trauma has. Psychological responses to trauma can make it difficult for these individuals to fit in and function in society. A supportive and empowering environment tends to reduce responses to trauma. Designing shelters which recognize and accommodate for the trauma of the individuals residing within would benefit their psychological health and overall wellbeing. This, in turn, may lead to these individuals being better equipped to function in society and interact positively and effectively with others.
