Every year, more than 50 billion chickens are killed for
food. Currently most chicken feathers end up as landfill, grist for
incinerators, or protein powder for animals. The vast majority of insulation
material is synthetic and derived from petroleum-based materials. Feathers make
up 5% of a chicken’s bodyweight, and 80 chickens can produce 22 pounds of raw
materials. This could be a great way for the poultry and insulation industry to
collaborate and have less waste and reduce the use of petroleum derived products.
