Making public transit more accessible to the public now has a new directive. Beginning in July of 2018, Trimet has made it more affordable to ride it's buses and light rail trains by making it more affordable to people who struggle financially. Adults who qualify based on income are now only required to pay half what is normally required for a day pass or receive 70% off of the standard price for a monthly travel pass. Previously, low income was a barrier to many people when it came to riding mass transit, and this new program of reduced fares opens a lot more doors in neighborhoods that might have limited opportunities. Those making less than $24,000 annually will qualify, reducing a single trip costing $2.50 down to $1.25, and a monthly pass from $100 to just $28. Doing the math, frequent riders who qualify can save around $850 annually. To see if you qualify, the Trimet office at Pioneer Square requires proof of income or being enrolled in a government subsidized social program such as EBT or OHP automatically makes you eligible. This new opportunity is perfect for students on a set income who need to get from home to campus or from campus to virtually anywhere around the City of Portland.
