Concerns About I-5 Expansion Project

The controversy over the proposed expansion to a 1.7-mile stretch of Interstate 5 near the Rose Garden continues following the end of the public comment phase.  The health of local youth and impacts to greenhouse gas emissions are two of the issues raised this summer by the project.

Aaron Brown of the organization No More Freeway Expansions claims that the Oregon Dept. of Transportation may not be using accurate data in its forecasting that expansion of I-5 is necessary.  Further, he claims that ODOT has not released the data they have based their decisions on to the public for scrutiny and transparency.

The Harriet Tubman Middle School, located close to I-5, will be directly next to the newly expanded lanes.  A study conducted by Portland State University in 2018 warned that the air quality is already too dangerous for kids.  The expanded lanes will add another 11 million tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. None of the I-5 expansion considers bicycle traffic.
