Plarn: A New Material

Upcycling DIY (do-it-yourself) projects are becoming more and more popular each day. However, many of the projects are focused on either finding an alternative use for the upcycled good, decorating the “junk” to something more aesthetically pleasing, or a simple refinishing. In other words, we rarely find creative ways to turn our waste into a whole new material to use for an entirely different project beyond its inherent properties.

So, if you are looking for an environmentally-responsible craft supply that is affordable and virtually everywhere, then you are in luck. Meet “plarn”.

What is plarn? Well, plarn is actually a portmanteau of pl(astic bags) and (y)arn. Essentially, you are upcycling the plastic shopping and produce bags to make yarn, which can then be crocheted, knitted, braided, or weaved. Therefore, opening up a whole new world for creative design and exploration.

How do you make plarn? You can follow the easy instructions here.

What can you make with plarn? Well, the possibilities are limitless, but here are some examples of plarn projects from Plastic Bag Crafts.
